On eight different places in Amsterdam you will find a tiny counter with 'Stamppotje' above it. And you will definitely pronounce that wrong. But that's ok. Because the food doesn't get anymore Dutch than this. Locals love it because at this place you can get food like your mum makes it, to take away.
The Dutch say that their kitchen 'does not exist'. We're a little jealous of what Italian, Spanish and Mexican mums cook. The only thing we really have, is these winter dishes. The most famous ones are 'Boerenkool' en 'Hutspot'. In the summertime Stamppotje turns into 'IJscuypje', which sells - a little less Dutch, but still good - ice cream.
If you're not sure which of these weird looking, mashed potato dishes you want, don't worry. You can try a very small portion for 90 cents.
