Just a stone’s throw away from the downtown core, you’ll walk past this tiny treasure trove if you aren’t careful. Argo centers on Anglophone literature and is the oldest English-language bookstore in Montreal. Established by John George and currently operated by three friends who met in an English Lit class, it has been around since the sixties.

Why you should visit it
You’ll likely uncover several gems here. Avid readers will find an array of genres ranging from literature & poetry, to philosophy, science & religion, and even children’s books. Works from local writers can also be spotted within the shelves. Stuck on what to read next? The amicable staff is more than willing to make a recommendation or two.

Once a month, Argo Bookshop hosts Open Mic nights for writers, comedians, and musicians.
