About Sydney

► The basic facts: 1. Sydney is the largest city in Australia. 2. Australia's major cities are among the most ethnically diverse in the world. Sydney's current population of 4.7 million is made up of people from over 200 different ethnic backgrounds. We're jigsawed together across a metropolitan area as big as London. 3. We have a temperate climate: warm summers and mild winters. 4. You can (almost) get whatever you want, (pretty much) whenever you want it. 5. Australia's most widely performed playwright, David WIlliamson, wrote a piece about Sydney in 1987 called Emerald City. Sydney's also been called New York by the sea, Club Med and the City of Sin. But the Emerald City is probably the most accurate. You can just imagine it emblazoned on our antipodean circus tent. Roll up! Roll up! See the Emerald City of Aus, with its thundering wizards, manicured lions, boisterous munchkins, tin-men, fearless scarecrows and ingenues in ruby slippers! Come along ladies and gents - lose yourself in the most beautiful and expensive, the loudest and boldest, most image obsessed and merrily debauched city in the land! ► DISCLAIMER: Like any city, this little town has its downsides. Yes, it rains sometimes. Yes, you will need a jacket in winter. And sometimes it's filthy. Sometimes it's mean. Sometimes it doesn't even care about you at all. That's life. Best not get attached - to the good or the bad - because things change quickly in the Emerald City. And besides, every impression it's made on you is going to drift off into the big blue when you pick a beach, any beach, and let the water embrace your weary soul as your body floats free.
