I got a tour of Gamla Stan this December. Our guide was excellent and very knowledgeable. She answered all of my random questions and was very nice. Even though the tour was Christmas oriented it included all sorts of cool information from the City. It was a reasonable price and even included pepparkakor and glogg at the end! A must-do if you are in Stockholm at Christmas.

Highlights

“Julklappsrim”, “Kalle Anka” and “lussebulle”, Swedish Christmas traditions are not complete without them.

See Den Gyldene Freden, one of the oldest restaurants in Stockholm and a popular spot for “julbord”

Take in candelabras glowing in the windows while you stroll down the cobblestone streets of the Old Town

Christmas Market on the main square, Stortorget, where the smell of roasted almonds and warmed glögg fill the air

Learn about Lucia Day traditions celebrated on December 13th, including the “Lucia train”.

Description

Have you ever experienced Christmas in Stockholm? The falling snowflakes light up the Nordic winter darkness and the smell of roasted almonds hit you as you wander down the streets of Stockholm. The Christmas bells rattle in the wind, a choir is singing somewhere nearby. Has your Christmas spirit arrived yet? Get to know the Swedish way of celebrating this special time of year and what Christmas in Stockholm is really like.

During your walking tour of the cosy winter laden Old Town, you will learn about where the custom of placing advent candelabras in the window comes from, what is found on a traditional Swedish julbord, who the bearer of light is and what Swedish Santa Claus looks like. In other words - what Christmas in Stockholm is all about, and how the Swedes awaken their Christmas spirit. No Christmas walking tour would be complete without a stop to a local Christmas market, and it just so happens that the main square in the Old Town, Stortorget, has their very own (which we recommend to return to after the tour). Lucky us!

When the wintry breeze of Jack Frost’s breath hits your skin, we’ll make a stop inside, treating you to a taste of non-alcoholic glögg, or mulled wine, which will make you all warm and fuzzy inside again. And who can say no to a gingerbread cookie to dip in their mulled wine? As you sip your warm drink, you can close your eyes and imagine what most Swedes and locals are doing on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon in December. Now warmed up and prepared to brave the cold again, our search for Stockholm’s Christmas Spirit is complete. Can you feel it in the air?!

Please note: The majority of this tour takes place in areas where you will have to walk on cobblestones.

We suggest wearing warm and comfortable shoes and clothes in many layers since the majority of this tour is outdoors, walking at a slow pace and stopping at various sights.

The Christmas Spirit tour was the first thing we did upon our arrival in Stockholm. We were met by Natalie, who guided us around the cobblestoned streets of Gamla Stan by lantern light, telling us about Swedish Christmas traditions. She took us through the Christmas market and to a charming candy shop, where we watched candy canes being made while enjoying mulled wine and ginger snaps - a wonderful way to warm up after being outside in the wintry cold. Stockholm Our Way had also taken care of booking a Julbord dinner for us at Sjatte Tunnan, a fun medieval themed restaurant. We ended our tour there, but first Natalie made sure that our dinner reservation was in order, then wished us a Merry Christmas and left us to our feast. Overall, a very delightful and memorable evening. Thanks to Stockholm Our Way for such a lovely welcoming introduction to their beautiful city.
