Shiro Meda, at the foot of the Entoto hills in northern Addis Ababa, is the city’s main market for traditional Ethiopian dress. Its stalls overflow with handwoven cotton habesha kemis gowns, netela shawls and gabi blankets, many trimmed with the colourful tibeb embroidery for which the country is known. A centre of the handloom-weaving trade, it is the place to watch artisans at work and buy authentic Ethiopian textiles and clothing directly from the makers.
