The Lutheran Evangelical Cathedral of St Mary is the most prominent church in Sibiu, a great Gothic edifice whose towering steeple dominates the city skyline. A ticketed visit reveals a lofty interior with a huge fresco, an impressive organ and the tombs of prominent Saxons, and the brave can climb the tower for magnificent views over the old town. A centre of the Transylvanian Saxon community for centuries, it is both an architectural landmark and a moving reminder of the city’s German heritage, and one of the essential sights of Sibiu.
