A volcanic plateau above 2,000 metres with ancient Hindu temples, sulphur craters and the Sikunir viewpoint famed for its golden sunrise.
A twelve-hour guided trip with a midnight pickup and roughly three hours on the road, timed to reach the Sikunir hill for first light.
Local tip: The standard pickup is in Yogyakarta, with Semarang pickup offered for a supplement. Nights on the plateau are bitterly cold.
