The Transfăgărășan climbs above 2,000 metres through the Făgăraș mountains and is widely rated one of the most dramatic drives in Europe.
An eight-hour trip from Brașov to Bâlea Lake and Cârța Monastery. From November to July the summit road closes and a cable car is used instead.
Local tip: Departs Brașov, about 170 km from Târgu Mureș. Come between July and November for the full mountain road.
