Kale is the word for fortress in both Turkish and Macedonian, and the name is literal – the fortress is directly above. Gorna Porta, the surviving stone Upper Gate into the walled town, is the nearest landmark, which puts the Icon Gallery and Holy Mary Perybleptos a couple of minutes away.
Local tip: It is a genuine climb up from the lakefront. Travel light, or take a taxi as far as the Upper Gate.
