Parco di San Giovanni was once Trieste’s provincial psychiatric hospital and became, from 1971, the base for Franco Basaglia’s reforms that led to Italy’s 1978 law closing asylums nationwide.
The park is free and open to the public at all hours, and its former pavilions now house a theatre, cafes and the offices of La Collina, a social cooperative that employs people who once might have been institutionalised here; it holds 4.5 on Google across nearly 900 reviews.
Local tip: Look out for Radio Fragola’s building, a community radio station still run from the site since the 1970s.
