An oriental plane, Platanus orientalis, estimated at anywhere from six hundred to more than eleven hundred years old, with a trunk over twenty metres around, standing in the middle of the Old Bazaar square with cafes and shops built up against it. Local legend attributes its planting to St Clement of Ohrid himself.
It is free, it is lit at night, and it works as the actual meeting point of the old town rather than a monument people photograph and leave. More than three thousand Google reviews at 4.6 – for a tree – tells you how central it is to the place.
Local tip: Take a table at one of the cafes round the trunk in the early evening. This is where Ohrid arranges to meet.
