Lake Ohrid is one of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes, known by its ancient name Lihnid and shared with Albania, and the free walk along its edge is the best thing in the city. Kej Makedonija is the promenade the bar and restaurant terraces spill onto; from the town centre a long wooden walkway runs out over the water and round the base of the cliffs to Potpes beach.
That cliff walkway is the classic sunset stroll and the only way to reach the Kaneo restaurants on foot. On TripAdvisor the lake and its waterfront is Ohrid's number one attraction, with more than 2,300 reviews at 4.7 – ahead of every church and every museum in the city.
Local tip: Walk it westward in the late afternoon so the sun is ahead of you over the water, then carry on round to Kaneo for dinner.
