Rasht's Grand Bazaar traces back to the Safavid era, when the city's position on the old trade route to Russia and Europe turned it into one of northern Iran's busiest markets. Unlike most historic Iranian bazaars, it's entirely uncovered, open lanes and courtyards rather than domed roofs and vaulted halls, spread across roughly 24 hectares.
Fourteen caravanserais survive from different eras, mostly Qajar and early Pahlavi, and stalls sell fresh Caspian fish, local herbs, pickles and produce that help explain Rasht's UNESCO status as a Creative City of Gastronomy.
Local tip: Go in the morning when the fish and produce stalls are busiest and the market feels most alive.
