Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point of mainland Europe, a raw Atlantic headland in the Colares parish of Sintra municipality, free to visit and open to the wind and cliffs at all hours.
A stone monument bears the words of poet Luís Vaz de Camões, and the lighthouse and clifftop paths give an uninterrupted view of the ocean beyond, a genuine edge-of-the-continent feeling rather than a manufactured photo spot.
It sits some way outside Sintra’s historic centre, so most visitors combine it with a wider loop of the coast rather than a stand-alone trip.
Local tip: The wind here is considerably stronger than in the historic centre — bring a jacket even on a warm day.
