Kastel Fortress is the stone heart of Banja Luka, a pre-Roman fortification on the bank of the Vrbas that was restored and reopened as a public park in 2016. It is free to walk the grounds, with lawns, shaded paths and river views that make it the natural starting point for a first visit to the city.
In summer the fortress doubles as a concert and festival venue, so check what's on before you go if you want either a lively evening or a quiet daytime walk.
Local tip: Come at golden hour for the light over the Vrbas, and combine it with dinner at Kazamat inside the walls.
