Jalao takes up two floors right on Calle El Conde, the Zona Colonial's pedestrian spine, and turns classic Dominican comfort food – sancocho, mofongo, slow-braised pork – into something built for a big night out rather than a quiet lunch. Colourful murals, five separate bars and a stage for live music keep the room loud from early evening on.
It works equally well as a first stop for dinner or a later one for dancing, since the crowd tends to build as the night goes on.
Local tip: Arrive earlier if you want a table with less noise – it gets properly lively after 9pm.
