Escuela Taller Santo Domingo has trained young Dominicans since 1998 in the traditional trades – carpentry, masonry, ironwork, cabinetmaking – needed to restore the Colonial Zone's historic buildings, under a cooperation agreement between the Dominican government and Spain's AECID. It became a Ministry of Labour programme in 2005, and the training is free for students.
It is an administrative and training site rather than a museum, so there is no ticketed visit – but its work is visible across the restored buildings you will pass throughout the Zona Colonial.
Local tip: Look for its graduates' handiwork in the restored façades along Calle José Reyes and the surrounding streets.
