Las Baulas National Marine Park protects Playa Grande, one of the world's most important nesting beaches for the giant leatherback turtle, and it is roughly a 20-25 minute drive north of Playa Flamingo.
The park charges an entrance fee and has a small visitor centre and interpretive museum covering leatherback natural history; during the October-to-February nesting season, ranger-led night tours let visitors watch turtles come ashore to lay eggs.
It is the closest genuine ticketed sight to Flamingo, so it is worth the short drive if wildlife and conservation are on the agenda.
