Bardo National Museum

★ 4.6

The Bardo National Museum, housed in a former Ottoman-era palace on the western edge of Tunis, holds one of the world's largest collections of Roman mosaics, alongside Punic, Byzantine and Islamic-era artefacts spanning the country's history.

The mosaic galleries alone are worth the trip, room after room of intricate floor panels lifted from villas across Tunisia, and the palace architecture itself, with its carved plaster ceilings and inner courtyards, is as much a draw as the collection.

Local tip: The museum is closed on Mondays, and standard admission is commonly reported at around 15 Tunisian dinars, so check current hours and pricing before you go.
