Avenue Habib Bourguiba is Tunis's grand central boulevard, laid out under the French protectorate and renamed after independence for Tunisia's first president, lined with plane trees, pavement cafes and colonial-era buildings.
It runs from Bab el Bhar and the Medina down towards the Lake of Tunis, passing the Cathedral of St Vincent de Paul and the municipal theatre, and it's the natural spine to walk if you want to see the 'new town' side of the city.
Local tip: Cafe terraces along the avenue are a good spot to sit and watch Tunis go by between sightseeing stops.
