Dooky Chase’s Restaurant

Fried chicken at Dooky Chase's Restaurant in Treme

Treme

Why it matters: This is one of the country’s most storied Black-owned restaurants, opened in 1941 and shaped for decades by Leah Chase, who fed civil rights leaders in the upstairs room when few other places would. Come for gumbo z’herbes, fried chicken and Creole plates in a dining room hung with African American art. It keeps limited hours, so check before you go and consider the Friday lunch.
