Mardi Gras Indians in feathered suits in the Treme neighborhood

Treme

Why it matters: This small Treme museum documents the living Black cultural traditions of New Orleans, from Mardi Gras Indian suits and second-line parades to jazz funerals, much of it collected by founder Sylvester Francis. The hand-beaded Indian costumes alone are worth the visit, and staff share deep community knowledge. It is intimate and locally run, so hours can vary; call ahead.
