Every Monday from late afternoon, the Renascença Clube in Andaraí hosts the city’s most beloved roda de samba — the Samba do Trabalhador, or “Worker’s Samba,” founded by sambista Moacyr Luz. What began as a casual after-gig hang for musicians is now a joyous, sweaty, all-ages institution drawing well over a thousand people to sing along under the open sky. It’s about as authentic and infectious as Rio samba gets, far from the tourist circuit.
Book it: a Lapa samba night experience is a great way into Rio’s live-samba scene.
