A Thamel legend since the 1990s, Sam’s is the low-lit, wood-lined upstairs bar where generations of trekkers, travellers and locals have swapped stories under walls scribbled edge-to-edge with visitors’ messages. There’s no food — just drinks, popcorn and good company — with fair prices, a warm welcome and an easy, end-of-trek atmosphere. Opens around 4pm, opposite Hotel Mandap. The soul of Kathmandu’s traveller nightlife.
While you’re in the city, pair it with a guided Thamel & Durbar Square walking tour.
