St Michael’s Church, Keminmaa

St Michael’s Church, Keminmaa, Kemi

Keminmaa (near Kemi)

A remarkable little stone church on the banks of the Kemijoki, completed in 1553 and the northernmost medieval church in Finland. Its fame, though, lies beneath the floor: the naturally mummified body of vicar Nikolaus Rungius (died 1629) — Finland’s only mummy — preserved by the cool, ventilated crypt and visible through glass. Add well-preserved old wall paintings and a serene riverside setting, and it’s a genuinely fascinating stop near Kemi, open to visitors in summer.
