A tough, square 13th-century fortress built for Emperor Frederick II around 1239, once right on the shoreline before the 1669 lava flow pushed the coast away. Four round corner towers wrap a courtyard, and inside is the Museo Civico, with archaeology and art from the Biscari and Benedictine collections. A compact, atmospheric stop into Catania’s medieval past, open daily.
