Szimpla Kert

Szimpla Kert, Budapest

District VII (Jewish Quarter)

The original and most famous of Budapest’s “ruin bars,” opened in 2004 inside a crumbling former factory in the old Jewish Quarter (District VII). A warren of graffiti-covered rooms and courtyards is furnished with salvaged junk — bathtub sofas, old TVs, a Trabant — and packed nightly with a global crowd. It basically invented the genre; come before 10pm to see it before the crush (and for the Sunday farmers’ market).
