Tan Jetty is one of George Town's historic Clan Jetties — a cluster of stilted wooden villages built out over the water by Chinese clan families who settled in Penang from the 19th century onwards. Part of the UNESCO-listed old town, each jetty belongs to a single surname clan, and Tan Jetty is one of the quieter, more lived-in ones to stroll along.
A wooden walkway leads out over the sea past clapboard homes, little shrines, potted plants and drying laundry, with fishing boats bobbing alongside — an atmospheric glimpse of a waterborne community that has endured for well over a century. It is free to wander, though people genuinely live here, so it repays a gentle, respectful pace.
Local tip: Remember these are real homes, not a museum — keep noise down and ask before photographing residents. Come for golden hour, when the light over the water is lovely and the heat has eased.
