Plateia Athonos is one of Thessaloniki's most characterful corners — a warren of little lanes around a small square just off the main drag, part flea market, part old-school bazaar, part taverna quarter. It is where locals come to hunt for antiques and bric-a-brac, get a key cut or a chair re-caned, and then settle in for lunch amid the hum of a genuinely lived-in neighbourhood.
By day the surrounding alleys are lined with junk-and-treasure shops, hardware sellers and craftsmen; by lunchtime and into the evening the square fills with the tables of ouzeri and mezedopoleia serving small plates, grilled octopus and tsipouro. It is a wonderfully unpolished slice of the city, equal parts shopping, people-watching and eating.
Local tip: Come hungry around lunchtime, grab a table at one of the meze tavernas and order a spread of small plates with a carafe of tsipouro. Have a rummage through the antique shops first — haggling is part of the fun.
