The Landwehrkanal is one of Berlin's most beloved bits of outdoor life — a leafy 19th-century canal that loops through Kreuzberg and Neukölln, its tree-lined towpaths and grassy banks a magnet for locals whenever the sun is out. It is less a sight to tick off than a place to be: strolling, cycling, picnicking and hanging out by the water.
On a warm day the banks near the Admiralbrücke and around the canal fill with people drinking beers, playing music and watching the boats and swans drift by. Bridges, houseboats, waterside cafes and the twice-weekly market along Maybachufer give the whole stretch a relaxed, quintessentially Berlin neighbourhood feel.
Local tip: Grab a drink or picnic supplies and find a spot on the bank around the Admiralbrücke at sunset — it is a classic Berlin evening. Time it for a Tuesday or Friday to catch the Türkenmarkt (Turkish Market) on Maybachufer.
