Ukko — the island of Ukonsaari rising from the waters of Lake Inari — is one of the most sacred sites in all of Sámi Lapland. This dramatic rocky islet, visible for miles across the lake, was for centuries a holy place of worship and sacrifice for the Sámi, and it remains deeply significant to the indigenous culture of the far north.
In summer you can reach it by boat from Inari village and climb the marked path to the top for sweeping views over the vast, island-studded lake. It is a place to tread lightly and respectfully: visitors are asked to keep to the boardwalks and paths and to leave stones, plants and the site itself undisturbed, in keeping with its sacred status.
Local tip: Go by boat trip from Inari in the summer season, and stick strictly to the marked paths — do not move stones, pick plants or leave anything behind. Pair it with the excellent Siida Sámi museum in Inari to understand its significance.
