It is one of the historical monuments in Addis Ababa erected in honor of the liberty of Ethiopia from the five years Fascist Italy occupation (1936 - 1941). It is locally known as Arat Killo meaning "Four Killo".
Visitors can find this place interesting especially if they want to learn the modern history of Ethiopia. The name Arat Killo is supposedly to refer to its 4km distance from the main palace, OR the four roads joining at the square.
