NDSM-Werf
Why locals love it
Even though NDSM-Werf is also listed as a 'neighborhood' in Like A Local, it deserves some extra attention in a special review. The NDSM-Werf is a former dock (from 1894 till 1979) where big and small ships were built and repaired. Nowadays, this area is a place where artists and other creative people do their thing and a great setting for parties.

Why you should visit it
If the Noorderlicht Café, Pllek and Bbrood, (also reviewed) were not enough to attract you to NSDM, Maybe these will: The graffiti art, free expositions at 'New Dakota', Amsterdam (indoor) Skate Park, the phenomenal view, the old submarine, many festivals/dance parties and the friendly artistic people. NDSM isn't pretty, but has a heart of gold.
Special tip
You can get to the NDSM-Werf by ferry. It's free and takes about 12 minutes. The last ferry back is at midnight. Friday and Saturday at 1 AM.
