The former royal garden of Athens

National Garden

Why locals love it

The Royal Garden was commissioned by Queen Amalia in 1838 & used to accomodate a wide variety of plants & animals. It has a romantic and nostalgic atmosphere and even though it has seen more glorious days you can still lose yourself in the scenic paths & feel a bit of the neoclassic Athens of the 19th & 20th century.

Why you should visit it

The lush and diverse vegetation, the fountains, the hidden pavilions and the scattered antiquities make the National Garden the perfect place for a stroll especially in summer during the hottest hours of the day. There is a beautiful small cafe inside the garden which you should definitely visit for a coffee, even though it is a bit expensive.

Special tip

Keep in mind that the garden closes at sunset every evening.
