Full Moon Party at Mar Bella

★ 4.4

Once a month, when the moon is full, the sands of Platja de la Mar Bella shrug off their daytime calm and fill with drummers, dancers and free spirits. Several hundred people of all ages gather to see the night out with acoustic music, impromptu circles and the odd midnight swim, a warm and unpolished slice of Barcelona's bohemian underground.

There is nothing official about it: no tickets, no stage and no bar, so bring your own drinks and something to sit on. The music stays acoustic, the mood is relaxed and welcoming, and it is one of the easiest ways to fall in with the city's psy-trance and squat-scene crowd, who otherwise keep well under the radar. Mar Bella is a short walk from Poblenou and easy to reach by metro.

Local tip: Check a lunar calendar before you set out, wrap up for the small hours, and take your rubbish home with you, as keeping the beach tidy is what keeps these gatherings going.
