The Pampulha complex, designed by Oscar Niemeyer around an artificial lake, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a landmark of modern Brazilian architecture. Its centrepiece, the Church of Sao Francisco de Assis, with its flowing curves and Portinari tile murals, is an icon of the movement. Together with the art museum and the lakeside setting, Pampulha showcases the birth of Brazilian modernism and is one of Belo Horizontes most important and beautiful sights.
