Zosch

★ 4.3  •  2

Zosch is a wonderfully old-school Berlin bar in Mitte, the kind of unreconstructed, lived-in haunt that has survived the neighbourhood's gentrification with its scruffy charm intact. On Tucholskystraße, it is beloved for cheap drinks, a mixed local crowd and — down in its atmospheric vaulted cellar — regular live jazz, ska and folk gigs.

Upstairs is a laid-back, smoky-feeling pub for a beer and a chat; downstairs the brick-arched basement hosts live music several nights a week, often with little or no cover. It is refreshingly unpretentious and reasonably priced, a reminder of the freewheeling old Mitte before the boutiques moved in.

Local tip: Check what is on in the cellar — the live jazz nights are the draw — and bring cash. It gets cosy when a band is on, so turn up early if you want a spot near the music.
