Via San Felice

Via San Felice runs through central Bologna from the area near Piazza Maggiore out towards Porta San Felice, the westernmost gate of the medieval walls. The gate dates from the thirteenth century, was rebuilt with a tower and drawbridge in 1334, restored in 1508 and again in 1805, and lost its flanking walls in 1840. The street runs beneath the continuous porticoes characteristic of Bologna's historic centre, lined with vintage and second-hand clothing shops, established boutiques, artisan goldsmiths and a scattering of bars and small restaurants; shoe shops are particularly well represented. The porticoed pavement gives shelter from rain and sun, which makes the street a practical browsing route whatever the weather, and distinguishes it from open shopping streets elsewhere. Individual shops set their own hours, generally opening around 09:30 or 10:00 and closing in the early evening, with some shut on Sunday or Monday morning. Bologna Centrale station is within walking distance.
