When mountains seem too obvious...

Eldorado Canyon State Park

Why locals love it

Everyone associates Boulder and Colorado at large with mountains, but we also have phenomenal canyons! Right in Boulder's backyard, the South Boulder Creek cuts sandstone into golden cliffs perfect for rock climbing or sheltering scenic hiking trails, picnic spots and fishing holes.

Why you should visit it

The instant accessibility of Chautauqua and the Flatirons is a great asset, but also means these areas can get crowded, which is typically not the experience one seeks when undertaking a venture into the wilderness. The drive between Boulder city and Eldorado canyon is breif, but enough of a barrier to keep this State Park more of a hidden gem.

Special tip

The small hamlet of Eldorado Springs is funky enough to deserve a quick visit. Check out the outdoor sculptures adorning the arts center.
