Gamnae Cafe

Why it matters: Gamnae Cafe is run by the Gamcheon Culture Village Residents’ Association – the registered nonprofit of village residents that also operates the village bakery, craft workshop and restaurant – and profits go back to the residents rather than an outside owner. In a village where most cafes are newcomers cashing in on the view, this one is the neighbourhood’s own. Stop in for coffee and patbingsu (shaved ice with red bean) partway through the hillside walk, when your legs need it. It opens at 09:00 and closes by 18:00, so do it before the late-afternoon crowds thin out the village.
