The setting seals the deal: a 17th-century monastery with a 5,000-square-meter garden that’s a protected national monument, sweeping views of Vesuvius and Capri from the rooftop, and a resident staff who’ll walk you through the Spanish Quarter’s alleys themselves. Why it matters: since 2006, the young people of the local La Paranza social cooperative have run these ancient catacombs, turning tourism revenue into 56 jobs and a full-scale revival of the once-forgotten Rione Sanità neighborhood. It’s a rare case of heritage tourism directly rebuilding a community: ticket sales fund training, an orchestra, a theater group and a recording studio for local youth.
