Dargah of Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki

The Dargah of Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki is a Sufi shrine in Mehrauli, close to the Qutb Minar complex in south Delhi, built around 1236 to house the tomb of the saint, who died in 1235. Born in 1173 in Osh in the Fergana Valley, Bakhtiyar Kaki was the principal disciple and spiritual successor of Moinuddin Chishti of Ajmer and is credited with establishing the Chishti Sufi order in Delhi during the reign of Sultan Iltutmish. Later rulers added to the complex: Iltutmish built the adjoining Gandhak ki Baoli stepwell, Sher Shah Suri added a gateway, Bahadur Shah I built the Moti Masjid and Farrukhsiyar installed a marble screen and mosque. Entry is free and visitors of all faiths are received. Modest dress is expected, with trousers rather than shorts for men and a head covering for women; shoes are removed before entering and some inner sections are restricted by gender. Qawwali is sung on Thursday and Sunday evenings, and the saint's annual Urs remains among Mehrauli's principal observances.
