Ka Papa Loi o Kanewai

A restored complex of terraced taro pondfields on the eastern edge of the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus, fed by a spring and cleared by students in 1980 from land that had been used as a dumping ground. It is run by the Hawaiinuiakea School of Hawaiian Knowledge as a working cultural and teaching site: kalo of many varieties, ulu, native plantings, and instruction in loi construction, Hawaiian language and protocol. Community workdays are held on the first Saturday of each month, free and open to anyone, with no booking required; participants work in the mud, so old clothes and secure footwear are sensible, and refreshments are provided. Parking is in the university structures or on nearby streets. It offers genuine practice rather than a performance of it.
