Native Books Hawaii

Native Books Hawaii

An independent bookshop and publisher devoted to writing from Hawaii and the wider Pacific, now in a storefront on Nuuanu Avenue after years at Ward Centre. The stock covers Hawaiian-language texts and learners' material, histories of the Kingdom and the 1893 overthrow, contemporary Native Hawaiian poetry and scholarship, children's books and cookery, much of it difficult to find on the mainland. The shop also issues its own titles. Alongside the books are lauhala weaving, kapa, prints and other work by island makers, and the premises host readings and language events. Staff know the collection well and can steer visitors towards reliable accounts of Hawaiian history rather than the tourist version. It opens Tuesday to Saturday and on Sunday afternoons, with street and municipal parking nearby.
