Konak Square is the symbolic heart of Izmir, dominated by the ornate Izmir Clock Tower, an Ottoman-era landmark from 1901 that has become the emblem of the city. Fronting the waterfront and backed by the Yali Mosque with its tiled facade, the busy square is a gathering place and a starting point for exploring the old town and bazaar. The clock tower is the citys most photographed monument and its natural centrepiece.
