Founded in 1857 as Kuolajärvi. Since the beginning of 1936, the name of the municipality has been Salla. Extensive areas in the eastern part of the municipality, Old Salla, were ceded to the Soviet Union in the peace of Moscow, which ended the 1940 Winter War. Salla, with 3,500 inhabitants, is located in Eastern Lapland.
Like traditional reindeer husbandry and forestry, Salla's newer livelihoods rely on nature and the sustainable use of natural resources. Clean nature is also the biggest tourist asset in the area: the municipality of Salla and tourism entrepreneurs have jointly drawn up an environmental promise for Salla.
Salla - away from it all, close to you - together with more vitality.
