Just outside Nilivaara village sits a traditional poroerotusaita, a reindeer separation fence built for the seasonal work of Kolari's reindeer herders. Semi-domesticated reindeer are herded in from the surrounding forest a few times a year, and at the fence's round central pen – the kirnu – herders catch each animal, check its owner's earmark, and sort it by owner and destination.
The last big commercial round-up here ran in the 1980s, but the timber fence and corral still stand, structurally sound, tucked into the forest along local hiking routes toward the Kesänki fells. Herding cooperatives can still organise a working separation on site, and autumn – especially the second half of October – is when round-ups happen across the region if you want to time a visit to the working season.
Local tip: There's no signage or visitor centre here, so it rewards curiosity rather than convenience – combine it with a walk toward Äkäslompolo's old hay meadows and the Kesänki fell for a proper half-day out.
