Varkaankuru – also known locally as Pirunkuru, the Devil's Gorge – is a steep-sided ravine on the climb up Kesänkitunturi, cut through slopes of old-growth pine that are centuries old in places. The marked Varkaankurunpolku nature trail follows the ravine before the path opens out onto the fell.
It's free and open year-round, with the short loop making an easy couple of hours and the fuller route continuing to the 517m summit of Kesänkitunturi for wider views over the Ylläs fells.
Local tip: The gorge holds snow and ice long after the open fell has cleared, so in spring it's worth spikes or poles even when the rest of the trail looks dry.
