New Market, officially Sir Stuart Hogg Market, is a sprawling Victorian-era shopping complex off Lindsay Street that has been Kolkata’s retail heart since 1874. Beneath its red-brick clock tower, a warren of stalls sells everything from clothes, fabrics and jewellery to spices, sweets and the famous Nahoum’s bakery. Chaotic, atmospheric and endlessly varied, it is a Kolkata institution where haggling is expected and almost anything can be found.
