Ugo Rondinone's installation of seven stacked columns of fluorescent-painted boulders stands in open desert beside Las Vegas Boulevard, roughly ten miles south of the city's edge near Jean. Each column rises to about ten metres, built from locally quarried limestone and painted in day-glo colours that read sharply against the Ivanpah Valley and the dry lake bed behind. It opened in 2016 as a two-year commission and has been extended repeatedly; it remains in place. Admission is free, the site is open from sunrise to sunset and there is an adjacent car park. No facilities of any kind exist on site, no water, shade or lavatories, and summer temperatures are severe. Early morning gives the best light and the fewest people; the drive from the Strip takes around half an hour.
